Suspended Rivers State Governor Similayani Fubara has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally directed him to reconcile with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, amid their lingering political conflict.
Fubara made the disclosure on Saturday while addressing his supporters, the “Simplified Family,” in Port Harcourt. He described the peace move as a “bitter” but necessary decision made in the interest of Rivers State.
“I want you and your oga to settle,” Fubara quoted President Tinubu as saying during their last reconciliatory meeting in Aso Rock.
The rift between Fubara and Wike began shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023, leading to a deep political divide in the state. The tension escalated to the point that President Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Fubara from office.

On Thursday, 26 June 2025, Tinubu met with all key actors in the crisis at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and brokered peace. After the meeting, Wike told reporters that peace had returned to Rivers and that all parties had agreed to work together moving forward.
Fubara, however, admitted that accepting the reconciliation came at a personal cost. “The reconciliation is bitter and heavy,” he said, but added that it was a necessary sacrifice to ensure peace and development in the state.
He called on his supporters to accept the peace accord in good faith and to prioritize the collective interest of the state above personal grievances.
Two days after reconciliation, Fubara was seen together with Wike at the burial of Wike’s uncle in Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Fubara’s presence at the burial ceremony further strengthens the conviction that their enmity has been resolved.
