Nigeria has secured the third position among Africa’s strongest military forces and ranks 31st in the world, according to the 2025 Global Firepower Index. This annual evaluation assesses 145 countries across over 60 military and logistical benchmarks—ranging from troop numbers and defense spending to equipment diversity and geographic advantages.
The PowerIndex score for Nigeria stands at 0.5771, which shows a steady improvement as the country strengthens its defense capabilities and expands both its hardware and operational reach. On the continent, only Egypt (19th globally) and Algeria (26th globally) rank higher. Nigeria narrowly leads South Africa, which is positioned 40th worldwide.
