Mass Deportation: US Now Targets Schools, Churches, and Hospitals
The United States immigration authorities have been granted the ability to arrest individuals at schools, churches, and hospitals. This new policy change, approved by President Donald Trump’s administration, marks the end of over a decade of protections for these “sensitive areas.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the decision, stating it is part of a broader immigration crackdown. The agency said this move is necessary to close off places where undocumented individuals might evade arrest.
“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense,” the DHS said in a statement reported by The Guardian.
As part of this directive, Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman reinstated the nationwide use of expedited removal, allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to quickly deport undocumented individuals who cannot prove they have lived in the US continuously for over two years.

This week, President Trump signed several executive orders aimed at tightening immigration laws. These include suspending the refugee system, blocking access to apps used for facilitating entry into the US, and strengthening cooperation between ICE and local governments.
Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, confirmed that ICE agents will immediately begin nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants.
Pushback from Advocacy Groups and Religious Leaders
Advocacy groups have expressed strong opposition to the new policy, warning it could harm immigrant families, particularly those with US-citizen children.
The Center for Law and Social Policy stated, “This policy may stop families from seeking medical care, disaster relief, and education. It could also increase the trauma of children witnessing arrests at sensitive locations.”
Religious leaders have also condemned the move. During a sermon at an inaugural prayer service, the Episcopal bishop of Washington urged the administration to show more compassion for immigrants and vulnerable populations.
