BREAKING: IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Slams Reno Omokri with ₦60 Billion Lawsuit Over Alleged Defamation

Detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has filed a ₦60 billion lawsuit against social media personality Reno Omokri, accusing him of making defamatory and damaging claims on social media.

The case, filed at the Enugu State High Court, was brought by Kanu on behalf of himself and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to court documents, the suit stems from a post made by Omokri on July 6, 2025, via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

In the post, Omokri allegedly linked Kanu, IPOB, and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to the killings of Nigerian security personnel and attacks attributed to “Unknown Gunmen” in the Southeast. The post, Kanu argues, paints him as a terrorist and criminal—despite the fact that no court has convicted him of such crimes.

Kanu claims the statements are not only false and injurious to his reputation but also amount to contempt of court, given that his trial is ongoing. His legal team argues the remarks breach his constitutional right to a fair hearing and presumption of innocence.

Through his lawyer, P.N. Agazie, Kanu had earlier served Omokri a Pre-Action Notice on July 10, 2025, demanding a public apology, a retraction published in two national newspapers, and an undertaking not to make further defamatory comments. When those demands were ignored, Kanu proceeded with legal action.

In his statement of claim, Kanu is asking the court for:

  • ₦50 billion in general damages for defamation and reputational harm.
  • ₦10 billion in aggravated damages for what he calls “malicious and reckless” statements.
  • An order compelling Omokri to retract the statements in two national newspapers and on his X account within 7 days of judgment.
  • A public apology from Omokri across the same platforms.
  • A perpetual injunction stopping Omokri from making similar statements in the future.
  • Compensation for legal costs and 10% interest on all awarded sums from the date of judgment until payment.
