Why Atiku, Peter Obi and El-Rufai Remain Silent in the Ongoing Claims of Christian Genocide by Islamic Terrorists and U.S. Threats to Nigeria

Nigeria has been roaring since the U.S. President Donald Trump, designated it as a Country of Particular Concern over claims of Christian genocide, and vowed to stop aid and invade the country to save the Christian population against Islamic terrorist.

The ongoing issue has spurred division in the country, with some majorly the southern and Christian population supporting the claim that Christians are being targeted and murdered by Islamic terrorists, while others majorly the Northern and Muslim population argue that Muslims are the most affected in the whole issue of insecurity. Hence, while the Christians clamor for U.S. military action, the Muslims do not consent.

Lots of public figures and government officials have all lent their voices, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who denied the existence of religious conflicts, saying his government upholds religious freedom as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

Noticeably, however, some popular figures in the opposition who have been known to constantly criticize the Tinubu’s administration, in this viral issue, have not said a thing.

Former Vice president of Nigeria and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar; former governor of Anambra and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi; and former governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai, have all remained silent.

Their silence is not without reasons. Of course, they have been calling out the government of the day for its ineffectiveness of solving the insecurity problems in the country. One would on a normal day argue that they do all these just to take power for themselves, as Tinubu himself did during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, not really because they care about the people.

Nigerians have tried to speculate on the possible reasons why Atiku, Obi and El-Rufai have remained silent. One of the outstanding reasons being that, they are all in a state of dilemma. They do not like the Tinubu administration, they are happy the U.S. and the world have called him out, however, they cannot also support the U.S. idea of invasion, standing against the Northern Muslim population, which would imply they are supporting the Christian South.

If they are to succeed in taking power, their views and positions must align with that of the Christians, Southerners, Muslims and Northerners. Hence, they fear supporting the U.S. would mean losing the support of Muslims and Northerners.

Peter Obi being a Christian cannot also openly deny the U.S.’ claims of Christian genocide or stand against their planned action or even presume neutrality, because his people in the South would demand he speak their minds, which makes silence the best option for him.

As a Nigerian politician and one hoping to take over the mantle of leadership, he understands the meaning of sovereignty, and the negative effects that the U.S. invasion could bring on the nations international standing. He would never openly nor even in his closet support the U.S. planned action like the average Nigerians would. What kind of politician would he be? Yet, if he openly upholds Nigeria’s sovereignty and frown a bit at the U.S. claims, and plans, it would also put him on the same line with his very rival, Tinubu and the APC administration.

The same logic applies to Atiku and El-Rufai, who cannot both be seen standing against their own Muslim and Northern people, yet they cannot frown at the U.S. because it would put them on the same page with their very political rival, Tinubu and the APC administration.

Hence, silence remains their best option.
