Authorities in Utah say they have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The news was first broken by President Donald Trump during a Friday morning appearance on Fox & Friends, where he said, “With a high degree of certainty, we have him… in custody.”
Governor Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson’s arrest, crediting a family member who alerted law enforcement after the suspect allegedly confessed. Surveillance footage showed Robinson arriving on campus in a grey Dodge Challenger shortly before the shooting.

Investigators say Robinson had grown increasingly political in recent years and had mentioned Kirk’s planned appearance at the university days before the attack.
The FBI reported that the suspected murder weapon (a Mauser .30-06 rifle fitted with a scope) was recovered from a wooded area, wrapped in a towel.
Inscriptions on shell casings included messages such as “Bella Ciao,” a reference to the Italian anti-fascist resistance song, and other mocking phrases. Investigators also obtained Discord messages linked to Robinson discussing retrieving the weapon from a “drop point.”
Robinson is claimed to be highly intelligent, lives in a $600,000 (N1 billion) apartment, and is currently a beneficiary of the prestigious Residential Presidential Scholarship—a fully funded merit-based scholarship reserved for only the brightest and best students. The scholarships are highly competitive.
He had wanted to commit suicide and vanish, but his father turned him in.
Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith described the probe as “a vast, complicated, and fast-paced investigation.” FBI Director Kash Patel said forensic evidence had been recovered swiftly from the large crime scene. Officials have not announced further arrests, but the case remains active.
The killing of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative voice, has rattled Utah and sparked nationwide attention. Authorities praised the cooperation of Robinson’s family, whose decision to come forward played a crucial role in the arrest.
