WCQ Playoffs: Osimhen Redeems Himself as Nigeria Crush Gabon 4-1 to Reach World Cup Playoff Final

Nigeria took a huge step toward qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Thursday’s CAF playoff clash at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The Super Eagles, led by an inspired Victor Osimhen, overcame a late scare to secure their place in the final playoff round. After a goalless first half played under heavy rain, Akor Adams opened the scoring in the 78th minute, capitalising on a defensive blunder by Gabon.

However, the Panthers equalised through Mario Lemina’s deflected strike in the 89th minute, forcing the game into extra time. Nigeria quickly regained control, with Chidera Ejuke restoring the lead in the 97th minute after a clever pass from Wilfred Ndidi.

Osimhen, who had missed a clear chance late in normal time, made amends with two superb goals in the 102nd and 110th minutes, sealing a commanding win for Nigeria. His brace, along with Ejuke’s composed finish, left Gabon with no way back.

The result follows Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in October, where Osimhen scored a hat-trick, further boosting his reputation as Africa’s top striker.

With this win, Nigeria advances to face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16. The victor will proceed to the intercontinental playoff for a chance to secure one of Africa’s remaining World Cup slots.
