Panic broke out on Tuesday after a section of Afriland Towers, a commercial high-rise in the Marina area of Lagos Island, caught fire. The building houses several offices, including a branch of the United Bank for Africa.
Videos shared online showed thick smoke pouring from the six-storey structure as terrified occupants tried to escape. In some clips, people were seen attempting to leap from upper floors, while others were helped down with ladders by residents and passersby. Crowds gathered outside the building as the situation unfolded.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, stating that the fire began in the inverter room in the basement before spreading. Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations were deployed to contain the blaze and lead evacuation efforts.
Eyewitnesses allege that the fire service team arrived an hour after the outbreak.
As of press time, authorities reported that evacuation was ongoing and no casualties had been officially confirmed.
