Tension flared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday as Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), erupted in anger after the court fixed November 20 for judgment in his long-running terrorism trial.

Kanu, who is representing himself, refused to open his defence, instead unleashing a barrage of harsh words at the presiding judge.

“You don’t know law, you don’t law, your own constitution you don’t respect. You don’t know what justice means. You have no idea what justice means,” Kanu shouted, accusing the court of perverting the constitution. “Useless black African people… you don’t know the meaning of justice,” he added.

The IPOB leader demanded that the judge show him the “written law” authorising his trial, describing the proceedings as “nonsense” and politically driven. “You think Britain can ask you to jail me and you’ll jail me. You’re dreaming,” he fumed.

Justice James Omotosho, however, went ahead to fix November 20 for judgment, ruling that Kanu had failed to use the six days granted to him to present his defence. The court maintained that he could not claim to have been denied a fair hearing.

Kanu had earlier filed a fresh motion insisting that the terrorism law under which he was charged had been repealed and urged the court to strike out the case. The prosecution opposed the move, arguing that the trial was being conducted within the law.
