Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has denied reports that he insulted a naval officer during a heated confrontation over a disputed plot of land in Abuja, insisting his remarks were misunderstood.

The clash occurred on Tuesday when Wike and his team moved to stop construction on a property he said was illegally acquired by a former Chief of Naval Staff. Soldiers, including Lt A.M. Yerima, had been deployed to guard the site, leading to a confrontation in which Wike demanded that construction be halted.

The minister said on Thursday that his comments were directed at the officer’s actions—not the military as an institution.

“Some people said I called the boy a fool. What I meant was that you cannot carry out an illegal order. I never said the military is a fool. I know the sacrifices they make,” Wike explained.

He stressed that he intervened because FCDA officials were reportedly attacked while trying to enforce development regulations.

“How can I sit in my office when government officials are being beaten? My job is to act,” he said.

Wike criticized the retired naval chief involved in the dispute, accusing him of using active-duty personnel to block lawful enforcement. He compared the situation to other prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who he said handled similar issues respectfully.

The minister reaffirmed his respect for the armed forces but insisted that all parties (military or civilian) must obey due process and government-approved allocations.
