A viral video has stirred outrage after Nigerian soldiers on active duty publicly lamented the poor quality of food supplies sent to them while fighting insurgency. The soldiers, clearly frustrated, displayed the food items, claiming this is what they’re expected to survive on while risking their lives.
The soldiers complained that they are being given very minimal food items for a month among nine persons. Whereas, their monthly feeding allowance is N60,000 for each soldier. The food items given to them are not even up to the amount for nine persons.
In response, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the video and the conditions surrounding it.
The Army, through its Acting Director of Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, released a press statement acknowledging the video. She said the issue is being treated with the seriousness it deserves. She explained that while the full details of the video are still being verified, the Army hierarchy is not ignoring the concerns raised.

“The Chief of Army Staff has directed a detailed investigation to uncover what really happened, and the findings will be made public,” she said.
General Oluyede emphasized that the welfare of troops is a key priority of his leadership. He urged soldiers to use the proper channels to voice complaints, warning that sharing grievances through unauthorized platforms (especially on operational matters) violates military discipline.
Still, many Nigerians are questioning how men tasked with defending the country can be left to feed on substandard rations. A social media user reacted, saying, “These are people risking their lives daily. They deserve better.” Others believe the investigation will only be about punishing the soldiers for disclosing such to the public media.
The Army Chief has, however, reassured both the troops and the public that changes will be made where necessary. “The well-being of our soldiers is central to our mission. We are committed to making things right,” he said.
