A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, June 5, at an off-campus lodge near Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, where a male student reportedly jumped from the balcony of a three-storey building and died.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud thud and rushed outside to find the student lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was later confirmed dead.
According to reports, the student had allegedly consumed a psychoactive substance popularly known as “colos” shortly before the incident. A fellow student told newsmen that the substance was given to the deceased by another resident of the lodge, who was seen behaving irrationally after the tragedy.

A disturbing video circulating online shows angry residents confronting the individual accused of giving the substance to the victim. He appeared to be under the influence and was reportedly unable to respond coherently to the accusations.
Authorities have taken the suspect into custody. Police say he will be questioned further once he recovers from the effects of the substance.
The school management has yet to issue an official statement, but students and residents have expressed shock and concern over the growing use of illicit substances in off-campus hostels. Many are calling for stronger regulations and mental health support for students.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family. The case is under investigation.
