Vice President Kashim Shettima has tactically affirmed that the president cannot unilaterally remove an elected governor and that he doesn’t even have the power to remove even a councilor.

Shettima recalled how, during his tenure as Borno State governor, former President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to dismiss him. The move was thwarted thanks to former House Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, former AGF Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), and Kabiru Turaki (SAN), who informed Jonathan that such a removal would be unconstitutional.

Speaking at the launch of OPL 245: The Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Oil Block, Shettima said Tambuwal and Adoke stood firm at the Federal Executive Council and reminded Jonathan, “You do not have the power to remove a governor, not even a councillor.” He added that this principled stand is why his relationship with both figures has remained strong.

Shettima further urged public servants to break away from the “culture of secrecy” and embrace transparency through written records and memoirs. “Our stories belong to the nation,” he said, emphasizing that history demands accountability.

At the same event, former SGF Anyim Pius Anyim read Jonathan’s message, praising Adoke for standing firm despite later being persecuted by Buhari’s administration.

Governor Seyi Makinde and ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai also chipped in, pointing out that the book is a timely catalyst for institutional reform and the documentation of Nigeria’s political history.

Adoke, the author and ex-AGF, said he has forgiven those that wronged him and clarified that his memoir aims to set the record straight, not to malign. He highlights how the OPL 245 deal continues to raise questions about governance, sovereignty, and the country’s economic interests.

Shettima’s speech sparked debates about the events of a few months ago, when his boss, President Bola Tinubu, suspended the Governor of Rivers State, Similayani Fubara, over some political rifts and installed a sole administrator in his stead.
