Prominent Biafra separatist figure Simon Ekpa appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday, May 30, 2025, as his terrorism trial commenced. Finnish authorities have accused Ekpa of using social media platforms to incite violence and unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region, promoting actions that allegedly led to attacks on civilians and government officials.
Ekpa, who resides in Lahti, Finland, and has previously served on the city’s public transport committee, was arrested in November 2024 alongside four others on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses. Following his arrest, Finnish authorities froze his assets and those of associated entities, citing violations of the Finnish Money Collection Act related to alleged fundraising for terrorist purposes between August 2021 and November 2024.

During the court proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence of Ekpa’s online activities, including videos and posts that purportedly incited violence. State prosecutor Sampsa Hakala stated, “We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications.” Ekpa has denied the allegations, asserting that he did not order weapons for pro-Biafra groups or engage in terrorism financing.
The Finnish legal system does not recognize bail for such offenses, and Ekpa remains in custody at Kylmäkoski Prison. His trial is expected to continue over the coming months, with Finnish authorities emphasizing their commitment to addressing activities that promote violence, even when orchestrated from abroad.
In Nigeria, Ekpa’s activities have been linked to enforced sit-at-home orders and other actions that have significantly impacted the South-East’s economy and security. Nigerian officials, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, have welcomed his arrest, viewing it as a step toward curbing violence in the region.
