Tanzania’s presidential election on Wednesday descended into tension and outrage as low voter turnout, heavy security, and widespread protests defined the day. Reports indicate that President Samia Suluhu Hassan faced virtually no major challenger after leading opposition figures were jailed, disqualified, or declared missing ahead of the polls.
Observers in Dar es Salaam described polling centres as nearly empty, with armored vehicles stationed nearby and citizens too afraid to vote. Tear gas and gunfire echoed across several neighbourhoods as protesters denounced what they called a “sham election.”
Opposition leader Tundu Lissu of CHADEMA remains in detention on treason charges, while Luhaga Mpina of ACT-Wazalendo was removed from the ballot.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, accused the government of creating a climate of fear, documenting arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and killings in the lead-up to the vote.
The government imposed a 6 p.m. curfew in Dar es Salaam after protesters torched a bus and a petrol station. The military was deployed across the capital, Dodoma, and Zanzibar, as the internet was shut down nationwide to curb mobilization.
According to Social media posts by some concerned Africans, Tanzanians have two choices—”vote for Samia Hassan or don’t vote at all.” The internet is off, opposition leaders are in jail, and some are missing.
Election officials promised results within days, but citizens and rights groups fear the vote has already been stripped of legitimacy.
