Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has sparked online debate with a bold statement about poverty and hard work.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Agu dismissed the popular phrase “poverty die by fire,” arguing that without effort and diligence, such prayers are useless. He acknowledged the value of prayer but stressed that faith without works is ineffective, quoting James 2:17 and Genesis 3:19 to back his message.

According to the actor, prayer opens doors to divine opportunities, but only human action can unlock and sustain them. “Poverty cannot die by fire. If you like, pray from now till tomorrow; if you don’t work hard, poverty will deal with you. God rewards diligence, not laziness,” he said.
Agu added that divine blessings come through preparation and effort, not mere wishful prayers. “For anyone to prosper, they must be ready to work. You must labour for your food, not just pray,” he concluded.
His statement has since generated mixed reactions online. While many agreed that hard work is essential for success, others argued that he downplays the role of spiritual warfare and divine intervention in overcoming poverty.
