In a compassionate move to rescue hundreds of stranded students, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated ₦20 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

The donation aims to support over 400 final-year dental students at risk of expulsion due to a lack of proper equipment and regulatory approval.

Obi made the gesture during a visit to the university on Thursday, July 24, 2025, where he described the students’ situation as a painful reflection of systemic failure in Nigeria’s education and health sectors.

Igbo TV had earlier reported that the affected students, some of whom have spent nearly a decade studying, were recently asked to transfer to other universities after the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) declined to induct them, citing the university’s failure to comply with its 10-student-per-session quota and poor infrastructure.

“No student should be punished for what’s not their fault,” Obi said. “Education is a right, not a privilege.”

The ₦20 million will be used to procure essential dental chairs and upgrade the faculty’s facilities in line with MDCN standards. Obi also pledged to rally friends and well-meaning Nigerians to make further contributions, promising to return soon with additional support.

This is not Obi’s first intervention in education. Just recently, he donated ₦15 million to dental students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

UNICAL’s Faculty of Dentistry expressed deep gratitude, calling Obi’s timely donation a lifeline for students whose futures were hanging by a thread.

So far, Peter Obi has donated approximately ₦530,000,000 to schools and hospitals from January to July 2025. Below is a breakdown of Obi’s interventions across Nigerian institutions from January to March.
