Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has increased the monthly salary of security guards at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital from ₦18,800 to ₦80,000.

The announcement came during the governor’s visit to the hospital on September 30 for an interactive session. One of the guards had spoken up about their poor pay, saying they were not permanent staff and received no benefits.

“We are suffering. I have a family with three children. Please help us,” the guard pleaded.

When asked by the governor how much they earned, the guard revealed their salary was ₦18,800. A hospital official added that the guards were outsourced through a private firm, which received ₦27,000 per guard.

Governor Makinde immediately ordered the termination of the contract with the firm and directed that all 67 guards be absorbed as ad-hoc workers of the hospital. He also approved their new ₦80,000 monthly salary, effective October 1.
