Former U.S. President Barack Obama has honoured late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing him as a musical genius who seamlessly blended art and activism to inspire generations.

In a video shared on his social media page on Wednesday night, Obama announced the release of a new podcast titled “Fela Kuti: Fear No Man”, produced by Higher Ground—the media company he co-founded with his wife, Michelle Obama.

“He is a musical genius from Nigeria who made music I really love, combining funk, jazz, and soul into a new genre called Afrobeat,” Obama said. “It’s a beautiful show about a unique figure in musical history who mixed art with activism.”

The 12-episode podcast explores Fela’s journey—from his childhood watching his mother fight for justice to his transformative time in Los Angeles in 1969, where music and politics shaped his Pan-Africanist vision.

Featuring over 200 interviews with family, friends, and global icons such as Burna Boy, Paul McCartney, Questlove, and the Kuti family, the series delves deep into the spirit of Afrobeat and Fela’s fight for freedom.

Obama, who also appears in the first episode, said Fela’s music “moves hearts, changes minds, and keeps people alive through the power of art.”
