Nepal has appointed its first female prime minister, Sushila Karki, following days of violent anti-corruption protests that forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Karki, a 73-year-old former chief justice of the Supreme Court, was sworn in on Friday as interim leader after President Ram Chandra Poudel reached an agreement with protest leaders.

Her appointment comes amid the country’s worst unrest in decades, which left more than 50 people dead and dozens injured. The demonstrations began after the government banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

Although the ban was lifted within days, anger over corruption and the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children had already fueled a nationwide movement.

Crowds set fire to parliament and government buildings in Kathmandu earlier this week, prompting Oli’s resignation.

Parliament is expected to be dissolved, with elections scheduled within six months. Karki, known for her integrity, has gained support from student leaders and youth movements who see her as a break from Nepal’s discredited political elite.

On Tuesday, she visited protest sites in Kathmandu and met with some of the injured.

Nepal’s army has since been deployed across the capital to restore calm, as the country navigates a fragile transition under its new leadership.
