The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched an investigation into the deaths of a young mother and her newborn at the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene, following a botched caesarean section.
A viral video posted online showed the woman’s sister, Ndifreke Amos, in tears as she accused hospital staff of negligence. She explained that her pregnant sister was taken to the hospital on Saturday, August 30, 2025, for an emergency caesarean section but was left unattended for over three hours because no doctor was available. By the time surgery was eventually carried out, the baby had already died. The mother later passed away the next morning due to excessive bleeding.

The footage sparked public outrage, prompting swift intervention from the state government. Governor Pastor Umo Eno expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to set up a high-powered commission of inquiry.
In a statement on Sunday, Dr. John confirmed that the panel, made up of medical and legal experts, will investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. He added that a team from the ministry had already visited the hospital for an on-the-spot preliminary inquiry.
The government reiterated its commitment to tackling maternal mortality in the state, promising full transparency in the investigation and sanctions for any confirmed cases of negligence.
