The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement drive against illegal developments, demolishing 17 houses encroaching on waterways in the Ikota area and OOL Autos, the car showroom owned by social media influencer Ola of Lagos.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led an inspection team to the Ikota site on Saturday, where he warned residents against reclaiming wetlands or blocking natural water channels. He revealed that the affected properties had earlier been marked for demolition after multiple warnings were ignored.

“These structures obstruct the natural flow of water and worsen flooding. Lagos is a coastal city; we can’t stop flooding entirely, but we can reduce its impact through responsible urban planning,” Wahab said. He added that those behind the illegal reclamation would face prosecution.

In a related move, government officials also demolished Ola of Lagos’ car showroom, reportedly built beneath a high-tension power line — a violation of urban safety laws. Though the state has not issued an official statement, sources confirmed the demolition was part of the same citywide enforcement campaign.

The operation coincides with preparations for the Green Line Rail Project, set to run from Marina to Epe, which aims to integrate transport expansion with environmental protection.

Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said: “We must enforce compliance while advancing development. Safety and sustainability remain our priorities.”
