A popular TikTok content creator, Umar Hashim, widely known as Tsulange, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Magistrate Court sitting in Gyadi Gyadi, Kano State, over what the court described as “public misconduct.”
Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan delivered the ruling on Thursday, following a case brought against the comedian by the Kano State Censorship Board.
The charges stemmed from a viral comedy skit recorded in June 2025, in which Tsulange was seen bathing publicly on a street while dressed in women’s underwear—an act deemed offensive to public morality under the laws of Kano State.

While pronouncing the judgment, Magistrate Hassan stated that the one-year prison term could be substituted with a fine of ₦80,000. In addition, the court ordered Tsulange to pay ₦20,000 to the Kano State Censorship Board to cover the cost of investigation and prosecution.
The court maintained that the punishment was aimed at preserving public decency and enforcing cultural and moral standards upheld by the state’s laws.
Hashim’s conviction has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some arguing for artistic freedom and others supporting the enforcement of decency laws.
The case has once again ignited conversations around the boundaries of creative expression, especially in conservative regions where religious and cultural values hold significant influence.
