Israel was struck by a barrage of Iranian missiles on Friday evening following an unprecedented Israeli air campaign that targeted Iran’s nuclear and military facilities. Air-raid sirens blared across Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other cities as dozens of ballistic missiles and drones rained down, prompting residents to scramble into bomb shelters.
The Israeli military reported intercepting most of the missiles—with U.S. assistance—while a few penetrated air defenses, causing damage and wounding several civilians in Rishon LeZion and central Tel Aviv. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called the strikes “a declaration of war,” warning that Tehran would face serious consequences.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s preemptive bombings—which claimed more than 78 lives and injured over 320 at military and residential sites—as “blatant aggression.”

Their statement emphasised: “The Zionist regime’s attacks on Iran constitute a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and a blatant act of aggression… Iran reserves the legitimate and legal right to respond.”
They further vowed: “The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to defend Iran’s sovereignty with full strength.”
The initial Israeli strikes, named Operation Rising Lion, included air assaults on Natanz, Fordow, and Tehran, reportedly killing IRGC commander Hossein Salami, military chief Mohammad Bagheri, and senior nuclear scientists. In return, Iran’s counteroffensive, dubbed Operation True Promise 3, saw around 150 missiles and over 100 drones launched, with some hitting near military headquarters.
Global leaders—including Pope Leo and officials from France, Germany, and the UK—have urged restraint and dialogue. The United Nations Security Council has convened an emergency session as regional airspace closures and economic effects signal the danger of a broader conflict.
This sharp military escalation emerges just days before renewed U.S.–Iran nuclear negotiations in Oman, casting intense uncertainty over the region’s stability.
