At a recent conference hosted by YIAGA Africa in Abuja, former President Goodluck Jonathan reflected on the tense circumstances surrounding Nigeria’s 2015 elections.

He claimed that abrupt failures of INEC’s card readers in the South (including his own and those of his wife and mother) almost sparked widespread unrest. Meanwhile, he asserted, the North allowed voters to proceed without proper accreditation, stating, “I could have stopped the election.”

Several 2015 news reports confirm the scope of the technical challenges. At his polling unit in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Jonathan endured repeated failures of biometric card readers. After prolonged delays, he was finally accredited manually.

Meanwhile, widespread voter frustration grew as regions across southern Nigeria struggled with malfunctioning readers.

Observers also noted that the elections, while largely peaceful, were marred by this technology failure, prompting INEC to allow manual accreditation as a stopgap.

Additionally, Nigeria’s Civil Society Situation Room later criticized the uneven application of voting protocols, pointing out that thousands of votes were canceled across multiple states.

In the same interview, Jonathan revealed the coup plans against his administration. He said, “Every day I was hearing about the coup. They told me to leave the State House and sleep in a guest house, but I insisted on spending the night in the State House, so if they want to kill me, it would be there, and all Nigerians would know what happened.”

He said if he decided to go sleep in a guest house, if they came there and killed him, they would cover it up with the same Abacha story, that “an Indian girl brought an apple for me and I ate it.”
