The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has shared a deeply personal divine encounter, revealing that God warned him his firstborn would die if he ever left the church.
Pastor Adeboye made the revelation during the RCCG June Holy Ghost Service held in the early hours of Saturday at the church’s Redemption City. Preaching on the theme “Destined for Greatness (Part 2),” the revered cleric emphasized the importance of spiritual consistency and divine direction.
Drawing from a sermon earlier delivered by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye, the elder Adeboye recounted how, early in his Christian journey, he was tempted to join other prominent ministries that were popular at the time. However, he said God gave him a firm and sobering instruction.
“When I got born again, there were three major ministries making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to move from one to another,” he said. “But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die.’”

He recalled that at the time, RCCG was still relatively unknown, with its headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Despite being a university lecturer, he said he was instructed by God to submit to a spiritual mentor who had no formal education.
“I was a lecturer at the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay,” he explained.
Pastor Adeboye used the moment to caution young Christians against church-hopping, a growing trend he described as spiritually unstable and dangerous.
“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised. “Don’t be like those who move from one church to another without God’s direction.”
He clarified that his message was not a declaration of the superiority of RCCG over other Christian denominations.
“I’m not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he concluded, stressing that the key is obedience to God’s personal guidance for each individual.
