A monumental wave of youthful protest in Nepal forced a political upheaval this week, as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Poudel resigned amid a deadly crackdown over a banned access to social media.
The unrest erupted after the government blocked 26 platforms (Facebook, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, and more) for failing to register under new rules. What began as an outcry over curtailed expression ignited deep-rooted frustration with corruption, nepotism, and economic despair. The movement, led by digitally connected Gen-Zers, quickly spread across the country.
Tensions reached a tragic crescendo on September 8, when security forces clashed with protesters in Kathmandu. At least 19 people were killed and over 100 wounded. In response, the government lifted the social media ban late Monday.

But the damage had been done. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Oli resigned, calling for a constitutional solution amid unprecedented instability. Hours later, President Poudel stepped down too, compounding the crisis. Law Minister and Home Affairs Minister Ramesh Lekhak also left office, citing moral responsibility.
Protesters stormed and set fire to Singha Durbar (the seat of government) as smoke engulfed parliamentary buildings. Demonstrations continued even after the resignations, with authorities largely refraining from force.
India, concerned for its citizens in Nepal, issued a travel advisory urging caution. Due to the unrest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a security meeting to assess the regional implications.
Nepal now stands at a crossroads. The so-called “blood-soaked digital rebellion” (fueled by Gen-Z and hashtag activism) has toppled a government but leaves the nation without a clear path forward. Stability hinges on how the next leaders address demands for equality, transparency, and true democratic reform.
