There was tension in the Agbowa area of Lagos State on Monday after a man believed to be mentally unstable grabbed a soldier’s rifle and fatally shot him at a checkpoint.
According to a report by Platform Times, the incident happened at the Adeogun Bridge stretch along the Ikorodu expressway, sending commuters running for safety as soldiers rushed to regain control of the scene. According to security sources, the attacker had wandered near the checkpoint before suddenly lunging at the soldier and seizing his AK-47 rifle.
“He snatched the rifle and shot the soldier dead. It happened very fast,” a police source familiar with the situation said.

Other soldiers quickly subdued the man, but not before the fatal shot was fired. The identity of the slain soldier had not yet been disclosed at the time of filing this report, and attempts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful.
The incident has sparked reactions among viewers, with questions such as; “how was a mentally unstable man able to snatch a rifle out of the hands of a trained soldier?” “Was the soldier drunk?” Some people also believed it’s just a ploy to cover up a terrorist act, and the terrorist, as the acclaimed madman, could not be found anywhere, nor the rifle.
Security analysts say the Lagos shooting raises fresh concerns about the safety of military personnel stationed in busy public areas, as well as the growing mental health challenges in the country. A retired officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as “a serious operational failure,” stressing the need for tighter security protocols.
