A tragic accident occurred today when Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people en route to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India, shortly after takeoff.
The flight departed at 1:38 pm local time and issued a mayday about five minutes later before crashing into the Meghani Nagar neighborhood. The aircraft struck a hostel housing medical students connected to BJ Medical College, igniting a massive fireball and thick plumes of smoke.
Ahmedabad police confirm that at least 204 bodies have been recovered, with initial reports suggesting the death toll may exceed 290, including casualties on the ground. Tragically, most onboard perished, and five people on the ground also died.
Miraculously, a single passenger, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—a British Indian seated in the emergency exit row 11A—survived the crash. He escaped with impact injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Flight manifest records state there were 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian national onboard, along with twelve crew members.
Emergency services, including firefighting teams, paramedics, and civil authorities, rushed to the scene. Rescue efforts are underway, with hundreds feared dead amid large-scale destruction.
Air India, Tata Group, and Boeing are coordinating relief and investigation efforts. Boeing confirmed this was the first fatal crash involving a 787 series aircraft.
Global leaders—including India’s PM Narendra Modi and the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have expressed condolences and pledged cooperation in investigations and family support.
