Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has come under fire after a viral video surfaced, featuring elderly men from his ancestral home in Okhuesan, Edo State, accusing him of neglecting his roots despite his football success.
Omuyiwa John, claiming to be a relative of Osimhen’s late father, alleged that the Napoli-owned Galatasaray forward has severed ties with the community. He narrated how the village contributed financially to assist Osimhen’s father, Patrick, especially during the burial of Osimhen’s mother, whose traditional marriage rites were reportedly unsettled at the time of her death.
“We raised money for Patrick to conduct the marriage rites so his wife could be buried. Even then, Osimhen didn’t show up or acknowledge the community,” John said.

According to him, despite Osimhen’s fame and fortune, he has never visited the village, not even when his father died—choosing instead to bury him in Lagos, a move they say contravenes Esan traditions.
The criticism comes as Osimhen enjoys a stellar season with Galatasaray, having scored 33 goals and earned transfer links to top clubs like Chelsea and Al Hilal.
Supporters and critics clashed on social media over the accusations. Some argued Osimhen owes his success to his immediate family, not the community, while others emphasized the importance of honoring one’s roots.
One user wrote, “Victor doesn’t owe anyone, but it’s painful to see your people suffer when you’ve made it.” Another countered, “His father’s people helped in difficult times. He should acknowledge them.”
Osimhen has not responded publicly to the allegations.
