US Embassy Issues Security Alert to its Citizens in Nigeria Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has warned its citizens to exercise caution ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest expected to take place in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, October 20, 2025.

In a security alert posted on its official website on Friday, the embassy cautioned that the demonstrations, though billed as peaceful, could lead to disruptions, traffic congestion, and possible clashes between protesters and security forces.

“The US Embassy in Abuja informs US citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20th, 2025, in Abuja,” the statement read. “There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.”

The embassy further advised American citizens to avoid protest zones and minimize all non-essential movements throughout the city during the day of the protest.

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) amid calls for his release by supporters who argue that his continued detention is unjust.

The upcoming protest marks a renewed wave of agitation from pro-Biafra groups and rights activists demanding the federal government’s compliance with court orders regarding Kanu’s case.
