The United States has given the green light for a possible $346 million arms sale to Nigeria, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s fight against terrorism and illicit trafficking.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the approval on Wednesday, saying the package includes over 1,000 MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs, Paveway II guided bomb kits, more than 5,000 precision rockets, joint programmable fuzes, and various bomb components.

Also part of the deal are impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, test equipment, integration support, and logistics services.

Top American defense contractors (Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles & Defense, and BAE Systems) have been named as the main suppliers.

According to the DSCA, the sale will help boost Nigeria’s ability to tackle terrorist groups and curb illegal trafficking both within the country and across the Gulf of Guinea. The agency stressed that the move would not upset the military balance in the region.

The final cost will depend on Nigeria’s exact needs, available funds, and the signing of formal agreements.

This is not the first such transaction between both countries. In 2022, the US approved an estimated $997 million sale to Nigeria, which included 12 attack helicopters and night vision systems.
