The United Kingdom has issued a new travel advisory warning its citizens against visiting several parts of Nigeria, citing rising insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime.
In the advisory published on the UK government’s website, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said insecurity is worsening across Nigeria, with violent incidents occurring in nearly all regions.

The UK government warned against all travel to six northern states—Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara—due to the high threat from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). It also cautioned against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, and Taraba states, as well as the outskirts of Abuja.
The advisory revealed that violent crime and kidnappings have spread from the suburbs to central Abuja, prompting restrictions on the movement of British diplomatic staff.
It further discouraged travel to parts of the Niger Delta, including Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States, due to militant activities and frequent abductions.
In the South-East, separatist violence and clashes with security forces were cited as major risks, while in the South-West, crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping were described as “common,” particularly in Lagos.
The FCDO advised British nationals in Nigeria to remain vigilant, avoid protests, limit movement at night, and follow security instructions at all times.
