A Nigerian man based in Dubai, Idowu Ogunkanmi, has been awarded £25,000 by a UK High Court after a woman he had a one-night stand with falsely accused him of rape and launched a long campaign of harassment against him.
Mr. Ogunkanmi, a 44-year-old energy trader and father of three, met Cynthia Chia at a London nightclub in 2015. The pair spent a single night together at the Steam Bar in the Hilton Hotel, Paddington. After their encounter, he returned to Dubai, thinking the incident was behind him.
However, what followed was nearly nine years of emotional torment, harassment, and defamation. Within months of their meeting, Ms. Chia began accusing him of various things, claiming he had slept with her friend, demanding money, threatening to ruin his reputation, and repeatedly calling his workplace, sometimes over 100 times a day.
At one point, Mr. Ogunkanmi gave her £250, which he believed was to help her pay her phone bill. But things quickly escalated. In 2016, she accused him of rape. He returned to the UK in 2017 for a police interview. After a full investigation, the police found no evidence and took no further action.

Still, Ms. Chia did not stop. Between 2018 and 2022, she created several fake Instagram and Twitter accounts, using usernames like “rapist_trying_to_avoid_justice.” She posted his photos online and accused him of rape, bribing police, destroying evidence, and even child abuse. She also tagged authorities like the Met Police, Dubai Police, and the UK’s National Crime Agency.
Feeling helpless, Mr. Ogunkanmi took legal action. Ms. Chia failed to appear in court or present any defense. As a result, the court ruled in his favour and ordered her to pay £25,000 in damages for harassment and libel.
The court also granted a permanent injunction to stop her from making any further posts or contacting him.
Earlier, Ms. Chia had been convicted of common assault in a separate case and was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison, with a restraining order lasting five years.
Speaking after the judgment, Mr. Ogunkanmi said, “I met her for less than 12 hours. I never imagined someone could lie and go this far. She tried to destroy me for years. I’m glad the truth is finally out.”
The judge, Deputy High Court Judge Susie Alegre, said it was clear that the allegations were false and the harassment had deeply affected Mr. Ogunkanmi. She described the injunction as “necessary and proportionate” to protect his privacy and reputation.
