U.S. to Impose Severe Sanctions on Nigeria Over Killing of Christians in the Country
President Donald Trump: (U.S. to Impose Severe Sanctions on Nigeria Over Killing of Christians in the Country)

Over the persistent killing of Christians in Nigeria, especially in the Northern and Middle-Belt regions, and the Government’s negligence, the United States of America House of Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa has directed President Trump to impose sanctions on Nigeria.

The decision was made on Wednesday March 12, 2025, during a congress, where the lawmakers condemned the Nigerian government for failing to protect the Christian communities, and paying deaf ears to their security threats.

The committee cited a report by the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa, dated 2024, where studies found that 90 percent of Christians killed worldwide every year, were Nigerians. And that 55,910 people were killed between October 2019 and September 2023, while 21,000 others were kidnapped by terrorist groups operating in the region.

In an unanimous agreement reached by the lawmakers, Donald Trump has been given a go ahead to serve Nigeria strict sanctions.

The committee chairman, Chris Smith used the testimony of Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop at Markudi, as a prove of the continuous violence and security threats in some parts of the country.

“One of our distinguished witnesses today—Bishop Wilfred Anagbe—travelled a long distance to be with us, and his testimony is both compelling and disturbing,” Chris Smith said.

“Militant Fulani herdsmen are terrorists,” Chris continued, saying that they kill, vandalise, rape and kidnap, and would brag about it, yet the government of Nigeria is making no efforts to apprehend them or bring them to justice.

Chris believes that the attacks are religiously motivated, and that the Nigerian Judiciary has been weaponized against Christian communities.

He said; “Make no mistake – these attacks are religiously motivated. Denying this reality contradicts the overwhelming evidence we have seen with our own eyes. This ‘religious cleansing’ must stop, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
