The United States has unveiled the list of countries eligible for its 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), with Nigeria and other African nations notably absent.
According to the announcement from the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs, the updated list excludes several nations amid ongoing immigration policies, including deportation measures under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Interestingly, even major allies such as the United Kingdom were not included in the list. However, British citizens can still travel under specific conditions.

The Visa Waiver Programme allows nationals from eligible countries to visit the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. However, travellers must obtain a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure and meet all outlined requirements.
“Travellers must have a valid ESTA approval prior to travel and meet all specified conditions,” the Bureau of Consular Affairs stated. “Those who prefer a visa in their passport may still apply for a visitor visa.”
The programme provides a streamlined alternative to the traditional visa application process, enabling qualified travellers to enter the U.S. with minimal bureaucracy. However, the continued exclusion of Nigeria and other African nations signals ongoing restrictions in U.S. immigration policy.
