A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 14: a deadly attack rocked the IRIGWE community in Zikke Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, leaving 51 dead, including men, women, and children.
The killing spree, which lasted from around 12:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., is reported to have been carried out by suspected Fulani militias in what local leaders are calling another wave of genocide against the IRIGWE people; several homes and properties were also set ablaze during the attack.
The victims of the massacre range in age from as young as 3 to as old as 94, evidence that not even a child was left out. Among the deceased are, Musa (64), Reuben (94), Menche (7), Nema (4), Margret (6), and many others.

A full list of the 51 victims has been released by the Irigwe Youth Movement, which has condemned the killings and called for government intervention.
Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement, revealed that a similar incident had occurred sometime in December 2024, with over 30 individuals being killed, adding that the death toll within the district must be nearing a hundred now.
“Our people are dying in silence,” Yonkpa stated.
“Despite repeated pleas for intervention, there have been no arrests, no accountability, and no justice. We are beginning to wonder if the Irigwe people are considered citizens of the country.”
