The earthquake hit central Myanmar, near the city of Mandalay, more than 200km (125 miles) from Nay Pyi Taw, BBC reports.
The earthquake destroyed homes, structures, roads, bridges, etc.; a surviving resident testified that nothing is left. Makeshift hospitals have been formed to tender for the injured.
“The destruction has been extensive, and humanitarian needs are growing by the hour. With the monsoon season just weeks away, it is crucial to stabilize affected communities before further crises emerge,” the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies stated.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, leader of the ruling junta, has pointed out that the death toll could increase as emergency teams work to locate survivors, according to Starnews.
