The Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden and shocking death of a final-year student, Emem Okon Jimmy.
Emem, a student of Journalism and Media Studies, was found dead in her room late Friday night, July 18, 2025, a day after she was last seen alive.
According to neighbours, Emem had dinner with other tenants at her student lodge on Thursday evening. She was her usual cheerful self before heading back to her room to sleep. No one imagined it would be the last time they would see her alive.
On Friday, the lodge caretaker became worried after noticing Emem had not come out of her room all day. Efforts to reach her were futile, and when neighbours tried opening her door, they discovered it was locked from the inside.

Fearing the worst, the tenants climbed onto the roof, broke through the ceiling, and entered the room, only to find her lifeless body lying face-down on her bed.
She was covered in her bedsheet, with her phone still tightly held in her hand, as though she had tried to make a call. Blood had reportedly trickled from her nose, soaking into the mattress beneath her.
Her elder brother, who was contacted immediately, came in from Uyo and took her remains to the mortuary.
The tragic news hit the campus hard. Her classmates and friends, still in disbelief, gathered on Thursday, July 24, for a candlelight procession in her honour. Tearful faces, low murmurs, and whispered prayers filled the evening air.
The Head of Department, Dr. Inemesit Umoren, addressed the students with a heavy heart. “It’s painful that we are gathered here again to mourn a bright young soul. This is the second time we are losing someone in this department this year. I urge you all to take care of your health. Life is fragile.”
Emem’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, in Uyo. Her coursemates have promised to give her a befitting farewell.
On social media, tributes continue to pour in. One particularly emotional post by her friend, UdemeseAbasi James, reads in part:
“On Thursday we spoke in class. Why didn’t you tell me it was the last time? I would have looked at you longer. You called me ‘Mummy,’ yet you were the one who took care of me. Jimmy, why didn’t you open your door like you always do? I waited for your reply. I replayed your voice notes. But silence. Cold, painful silence.
“Rest well, my daughter. I will keep telling your story. You’ve left a mark too deep to forget.”
