Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga has pushed back at recent international pressure on Nigeria, saying President Bola Tinubu anticipated external attempts to cast the country in a bad light.
In an X post, Onanuga pointed to Tinubu’s swift replacement of service chiefs and the president’s clear marching orders to the military as proof that the administration is ready to act decisively.
Onanuga quoted Tinubu’s remarks to the new service chiefs, delivered Thursday: “Security threats are constantly evolving, constantly mutating. Of grave concern to our administration is the recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.

“I charge you, as the heads of our nation’s armed forces, to carry out your duties with patriotic zeal. Nigerians expect results, not excuses… Be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous. Let’s stay ahead of those who seek to threaten our peace. Let us deploy technology where necessary.”
Onanuga framed the message as Nigeria’s answer to foreign critics, including recent threats and the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
He said Tinubu’s actions signal a readiness to secure the nation and resist outside pressure while promising full presidential support to the security chiefs as they tackle the country’s long-running crises.
