Abdulrahman Bello, the main suspect in the murder of Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student of Kwara State College of Education, admitted in court that he dismembered her body but denied killing her.
Testifying before Justice Hannah Ajayi at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, Bello claimed the victim died of an asthma attack during sex. He told the court that he panicked and got drunk before using a knife and cutlass to mutilate her remains.
“I was drunk, and I panicked,” Bello said, adding that he acted alone and was afraid of reporting the death due to fear of the victim’s father.

Under cross-examination, he admitted not seeking help, informing the police, or taking the body to a hospital. The prosecution revealed that Hafsoh’s body parts and blood were preserved in alcohol and had not decomposed five days after her death.
Bello denied allegations of ritual motives, saying he loved Hafsoh and regretted his actions. “She was exceptional. She encouraged me to sit for NABTEB and buy a JAMB form. I can’t ever meet her kind again,” he told the court.
He also claimed his earlier video confession—where he allegedly admitted to poisoning and strangling her—was made under police torture.
The four co-defendants denied any involvement. Justice Ajayi adjourned the case to July 2, 2025, for the final adoption of written addresses after both defense and prosecution requested time to submit their filings.
