Sowore Accuses Peter Obi of Avoiding #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest Over Fear of Losing Spotlight or Concerns Over Who Would 'Steal the Show'

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, of distancing himself from the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign because of concerns over who would “steal the show.”

Speaking on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On podcast, Sowore said Obi’s refusal to join the protest was based on political calculations rather than principle. He explained that those around Obi believe the campaign has become about “who is leading it” instead of the fight for justice.

Sowore, who has been at the forefront of the movement demanding the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, stressed that true leaders should stand up for justice regardless of who initiates it. “Anyone sensible knows that when there’s injustice, you don’t look at who’s fighting for the cause—you look at the cause itself,” he said.

He dismissed suggestions that his campaign was politically motivated, insisting he was not working with Atiku Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, or Peter Obi. According to him, his activism has always been driven by the pursuit of justice and democracy.

Sowore described Kanu’s prolonged detention as persecution, arguing that Nigeria cannot pardon corrupt politicians and criminals while refusing bail to someone against whom there is no real evidence. He added that freeing Kanu would promote justice, reconciliation, and national healing.
