Shehu Sani Urges Tinubu to Retaliate; Block Americans from Entering Nigeria if Trump Imposes Travel Ban on Nigerians

Former senator Shehu Sani has called on President Bola Tinubu to impose a reciprocal travel ban on Americans if former U.S. President Donald Trump enforces restrictions on Nigerians entering the United States.

Sani made the statement via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle in response to reports that the Trump administration is considering barring citizens of Nigeria and 35 other countries over security and immigration concerns.

“The US should not ban Nigerians from traveling to their country. There is no reason to do that,” Sani stated. “But if they eventually ban us, our country should respond with a similar gesture. However, there are those of us who appreciate the peace of our villages and mud houses more than going to places we’re not welcomed.”

According to The Washington Post, the U.S. State Department, through a memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, listed countries that may face travel restrictions if they fail to meet new identity verification and immigration standards within 60 days.

Nigeria is among the countries named, along with Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe. The memo cites reasons such as poor identity systems, fraudulent documentation, and insufficient cooperation in deportation efforts.

The move is linked to a new executive order signed by Trump, reviving his controversial first-term travel ban. The policy targets nations with alleged ties to terrorism, high visa overstay rates, or weak government oversight.
