Lately, since the issue with suspended Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Akpabio, there have been controversies among Nigerian politicians of high standing.
During the first proceedings by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions into Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against the Senate president in Abuja, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, there was a serious clash between Ebonyi North central lawmaker, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi and former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili.
The verbal exchange between the two politicians became uncontrollable as they both threw tantrums of insult on each other, with name-calling such as, ‘hooligan,’ ‘disgrace to womanhood,’ ‘grandmother.’
Speaking to Channels TV on Wednesday morning, senator Nwaebonyi says he does not regret whatever insults he threw on Oby Ezekwesili, because she started it by telling him, a sitting senator, to ‘shut up.’

According to Nwaebonyi, Mrs Ezekwesili was asked to be an oath because she said she was a witness, but she said, ‘No, she can’t be on oath; she can’t oath.’
Then he (Nwaebonyi) offered to be on oath, saying he has his own evidence; however, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili told him to shut up.
“As a person, I said I am willing to be sworn on oath so that I can give my own evidence. I was addressing the presiding officer. She turned to me and said, ‘Will you shut up your mouth? You are a hooligan,” he said.
So he replied to her back instantly, saying, “You are the hooligan. For a mother like you, a grandmother of your age, a former minister of the federal republic, to tell a sitting senator to shut up his mouth and added that I am a hooligan.”
When the interviewer asked him if his response to Oby Ezekwesili was fair, Nwaebonyi said though he respects the former minister as a woman, he has no regrets for his actions, asking if it was fair for Ezekwesili to address him the way she did.
“How can I regret the scenario? I gave it to her. Is it fair for her to address me that way? As a former minister of the federal republic and a grandmother, ask her first,” he said.
The verbal insults between the two politicians sparked debate among netizens, with many condemning the Ebonyi State lawmaker for being too aggressive and insulting a woman who has a better political portfolio than him.
Oby Ezekwesili, who is 61 years old, once served as a vice president of the World Bank’s Africa region. She has served as a minister on two occasions: one as Minister of Solid Minerals and another as Minister of Education.
