The Senate has asked security agencies to urgently track and investigate false reports spreading on social media about the alleged collapse and death of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The directive was issued to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, following a motion raised on the Senate floor.
Raising the issue under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Orders, Titus Zam said the rumours had circulated online for over 48 hours and described them as dangerous and unacceptable.

He warned that spreading such misinformation about the Senate President—Nigeria’s number three citizen—could have serious national implications.
Zam dismissed claims that Akpabio suffered a medical emergency and was rushed to a hospital in London, describing the reports as fake, irresponsible, and misleading. He urged security agencies to identify those behind the rumours and ensure they are prosecuted.
The lawmaker also recalled a recent similar incident involving former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, noting a worrying rise in false information targeting top national figures.
Responding, Akpabio acknowledged the difficulty of policing social media, saying people often push out “garbage in, garbage out.” He asked senators whether the issue should be formally referred to the NSA and DSS.
The motion was put to a voice vote and adopted unanimously. The Senate has now mandated the NSA and DSS to investigate the origin, motive, and spread of the false reports.
