Rivers House of Assembly Commence Proceedings to Impeach Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun what seems to be impeachment proceedings against State Governor Siminialayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu.

In a letter signed by the Honourable Speaker of the House and dated March 17, 2025, it is alleged that Governor Fubara and his deputy have committed gross misconduct while performing their duty.

Drawing reference from Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), they accused the deputy governor of gross misconduct.

While in another letter, the executive governor was accused of reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, contrary to Sections 120, 121 (1)(2), and 122 of the Constitution.

Though their plan of action has not been explicitly stated, analysts and critics believe it is a move to impeach the Governor Fubara.

Tensions between the PDP governor and former governor, now Minister of the F.C.T Nyesom Wike, and the APC lawmakers in the state have continued to intensify.

The state notice read: “Mr. Speaker, NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS OF GROSS MISCONDUCT BROUGHT PURSUANT TO SECTION 188 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA (AS AMENDED), 1999.
