The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced plans to investigate how state funds were managed during the six months of emergency rule under former sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).
The lawmakers, who resumed sitting on Thursday following the end of the emergency rule, said the probe was necessary to ensure accountability and transparency. Speaker Martins Amaewhule stressed that the House would make sure the state’s finances were properly accounted for.

The emergency rule was declared on March 18 by President Bola Tinubu after a political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. With its end on September 17, Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the Assembly have returned to office.
As part of its fresh mandate, the Assembly has asked Governor Fubara to submit the 2025 budget proposal and forward commissioner nominees for screening.
Lawmakers say these steps, along with the financial probe, will help restore effective governance in the state.
