Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have declared plans to embark on a nationwide peaceful protest on July 21, 2025, to demand their removal from the scheme and an end to what they describe as years of suffering and neglect.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Union of Retired Police Officers in Kaduna. According to the group’s Chairman, Mannir M. Zaria, and Vice Chairman, Danlami Maigamo, the protest will take place across all 36 states and has been tagged the “Mother of All Peaceful Protests.”
The retirees argue that the CPS has failed to guarantee them a dignified life after service, leaving many in financial hardship, emotional distress, and in some cases, death due to poverty-related health issues. They are demanding the establishment of an independent Police Pension Board to replace the current system.

“Despite years of loyal service, we’re being treated like we never mattered,” the union stated. “We are not asking for too much—just the right to a decent retirement.”
The group expressed frustration that their earlier protest at the National Assembly in February and petitions to key government institutions have yielded no results. They also lamented the lack of action following a public hearing on the Police Pension Board Bill held in November 2024.
While insisting their demonstration will remain peaceful, they urged the federal government and National Assembly to urgently intervene before the situation worsens.
“We will not give up until justice is done,” the union stated, reaffirming their commitment to lawful and non-violent advocacy.
