President Bola Tinubu Approves an 80% Subsidy on Kidney Dialysis, Reducing the cost from N50,000 to N12,000 per session

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reportedly approved an 80 per cent subsidy on kidney dialysis in Nigeria.

This initiative, which was launched in January 2025, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, is part of the President’s core aims to improve the Nigerian health sector and make healthcare more affordable for Nigerians, especially in these times of economic hardship.

According to the report, the subsidy is approved for selected public medical centers across the six geopolitical zones in the country.

Below are hospitals participating in the kidney subsidy program:

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta Lagos
  • Federal Medical Center Jabi Abuja
  • University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan
  • Federal Medical Centre Owerri
  • University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

Others include:

  • Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta
  • Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)
  • Federal Medical Centre Azare
  • University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), and
  • University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

With this initiative, patients on kidney dialysis will no longer be paying N50,000 per session but N12, 000.

The Guardian reports that since its launch, 35 kidney patients have benefitted from the subsidy program at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).
