The ongoing funeral of the renowned Pope Francis has drawn worldwide leaders, royals, and tens of thousands of visitors to the Vatican City in Rome.
With the third and final day of his lying in state proceeding, nearly 130,000 have already visited St. Peter’s Basilica, where his open coffin has rested since Wednesday. Pope Francis passed away on Monday following a stroke and other health complications.
Imposing security measures encircle St. Peter’s Square, with drones grounded, snipers taking position on rooftops, and fighter jets ready for action. Authorities have also set up several checkpoints as they expect huge crowds leading up to Saturday’s funeral.

At least 130 foreign delegations, including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs, have signed up to attend.
Some other prominent individuals include US President Donald Trump, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Argentina President Javier Milei. Prince William will attend on behalf of King Charles, among other royals like Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Catholic royals will receive front-row seats, followed by non-Catholic royals and world leaders.
The Basilica stayed open late into the evening to fit in the sheer wave of mourners, closing only briefly from 2:30 am until 5:30 am. Pope Francis’s coffin will be closed up tonight in a ceremony attended by senior cardinals and then transported after the funeral to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, one of his favorite churches.
